How to use it

  1. Enter the ad spend and the number of conversions it brought.
  2. Read the CPA: spend divided by conversions.
  3. Add the clicks with "Add more numbers" to see the CPC and the conversion rate that produce that CPA.
  4. Add the revenue to compare the CPA with the average order value and to get the ROAS.
  5. Planning? In "Add more numbers", type the budget as ad spend and the CPA you can afford: the conversions appear under "Also worked out".

Examples

  • Campaign CPA

    US$ 2,400 spent for 48 conversions is a CPA of US$ 50.

  • CPA from CPC and conversion rate

US$ 800 for 1,000 clicks is a CPC of US$ 0.80. With 40 conversions the conversion rate is 4%, and the CPA is US$ 20.

  • Conversions from a budget

    A budget of US$ 3,000 at a CPA of US$ 40 pays for 75 conversions.

  • CPA against the order value

    US$ 1,500 for 60 orders is a CPA of US$ 25. With US$ 4,500 in revenue, the average order is US$ 75 and the ROAS is 3x.

Questions

What is CPA?

CPA means cost per acquisition, also called cost per action: what you pay in advertising for one conversion. The conversion is whatever the campaign is built to get, such as a purchase, a lead, an app install or a sign-up.

How do you calculate CPA?

CPA = ad spend ÷ conversions. It also follows from two other metrics: CPA = CPC ÷ conversion rate, with the rate as a decimal (4% = 0.04).

What is a good CPA?

A good CPA is one your margin can pay for. Work out what a conversion is worth to you (the profit of a sale before ads, or that profit times the share of leads that become customers) and keep the CPA below it. Then compare it with your own history for the same conversion, not with an average from another business.

What is the difference between CPA and CAC?

CPA is a campaign metric: ad spend for one conversion, and that conversion may be a lead that never buys. CAC, customer acquisition cost, divides all sales and marketing costs by the number of new paying customers.

What is the difference between CPA and CPL?

CPL, cost per lead, is a CPA in which the conversion is a lead. The formula is the same: spend ÷ leads.

How can I lower my CPA?

The formula has two levers: pay less per click, or turn more clicks into conversions. Targeting and the ad itself act on the CPC. A clearer offer and a faster, simpler landing page act on the conversion rate.
