How to use it

  1. Enter the conversions and the clicks of the same period and the same source.
  2. Read the conversion rate: conversions divided by clicks, times 100.
  3. Measuring a page and not an ad? Type the visits or sessions in the Clicks field: the sum is the same.
  4. Add the ad spend with "Add more numbers" to get the CPC and the CPA, and the revenue to get the average order value and the ROAS.
  5. Estimating? In "Add more numbers", type the clicks and the conversion rate you expect: the conversions appear under "Also worked out".

Examples

  • Campaign conversion rate

60 conversions from 2,400 clicks is a conversion rate of 2.5%.

  • The rate with the cost

    US$ 1,200 for 2,400 clicks and 60 conversions is a conversion rate of 2.5%, a CPC of US$ 0.50 and a CPA of US$ 20.

  • Conversions to expect

5,000 clicks at a conversion rate of 3% bring 150 conversions.

  • What a better rate does to the CPA

    US$ 1,000 buys 2,000 clicks. At a conversion rate of 2% that is 40 conversions at US$ 25 each. At 2.5% it is 50 conversions at US$ 20 each.

Questions

What is a conversion rate?

It is the percentage of clicks or visits that ended in the action you count as a conversion: a purchase, a lead, a sign-up, a download. It shows how well the page and the offer do their job once people arrive.

How do you calculate the conversion rate?

Conversion rate = conversions ÷ clicks × 100. To estimate conversions, turn it around: conversions = clicks × rate ÷ 100.

Should I divide by clicks, sessions or visitors?

Clicks fit ad reports, sessions fit analytics reports, and visitors fit long buying cycles in which the same person comes back several times. Each one gives a different rate for the same sales, so keep one base and say which one you used when you share the number.

What is a good conversion rate?

It depends on what counts as a conversion, on the price, on where the traffic comes from and on the device. A free sign-up and an expensive purchase cannot share a benchmark. Compare a page or a campaign with its own earlier periods and with your other traffic sources, and use a published average only when it states its source, date and industry.

How does the conversion rate change my CPA?

CPA = CPC ÷ conversion rate, with the rate as a decimal. With the same CPC, raising the rate from 2% to 2.5% cuts the CPA by a fifth.

Can I trust a rate based on few clicks?

Not much. With a handful of conversions, one more or one less moves the rate a lot. Wait for more data before you change a campaign because of the rate, and compare periods with a similar number of clicks.
