How to Run This NFL Quiz

The five rounds move from things every viewer sees on a Sunday to things only the history buffs know. Questions marked (Hard) usually need a name, a date or an exact number, so drop them for casual fans or save them for the last round.

CrowdSuggested roundsTip
Casual fans and kidsRounds 1 and 4, skip the Hard onesRead the notes out loud; they explain the rule
Super Bowl partyRound 3 at halftime, tiebreakers after the final whistleTeams of three or four, one answer sheet each
Serious fantasy leagueRounds 2 and 5 in fullNo phones until every sheet is handed in

Give each question about thirty seconds, then read the answer and the short note. The notes settle arguments, and in football there is always someone who remembers a different score.

If your group follows more than one sport, pair this list with our sports trivia questions, which cover soccer, the Olympics, basketball and baseball. Its football section is built around Hall of Fame receivers and running backs, so none of those players repeat here.

Round 1: The Rulebook and the Field

All ten answers come from the 2026 Official Playing Rules of the National Football League. This is the round where casual viewers score as well as die-hard fans.

  1. How many players does each team have on the field at one time?
Answer: Eleven. The rulebook says the game is played by two teams of 11 players each.
  2. The rulebook sets the field at 360 feet by 160 feet. What is that in yards?
Answer: 120 yards long and 53 1/3 yards wide. The length includes two end zones, because each goal line sits 10 yards from its end line.
  3. How long is an NFL game, and how is it divided?
Answer: 60 minutes, split into four quarters of 15 minutes each.
  4. Which scoring play is worth exactly two points?
Answer: A safety. A touchdown is worth 6 points and a field goal 3.
  5. After a touchdown, how many points can the try add?
Answer: One point for a kick through the uprights, or two points for getting the ball into the end zone again.
  6. How many charged timeouts does each team get per half?
    Answer: Three.
  7. How many seconds does the offense have to snap the ball once the next play is ready?
Answer: 40 seconds on the standard play clock. Going over is a delay of game.
  8. What is the automatic timeout near the end of each half called?
    Answer: The two-minute warning.
  9. How long is overtime in a regular-season game? (Hard)
Answer: One period of 10 minutes. If the score is still tied at the end, the game ends in a tie. Playoff overtime periods last 15 minutes and continue until there is a winner.
  10. Under the 2026 rules, can a team win regular-season overtime with a touchdown on the opening drive? (Hard)
Answer: No. Both teams must have the chance to possess the ball once, unless the kicking team scores a safety on the first possession.
