The 2027 holidays in the United States follow a calm pattern: 11 federal holidays, five of them fixed by law to a Monday, and three that land on a weekend and move to a Friday or a Monday for most federal employees. This guide lists every federal holiday for 2027 with its exact date and weekday, checked against the schedule published by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). It also covers the long weekends, the dates that move, the observances that are not days off, and how much leave it takes to turn Thanksgiving or the end of the year into a proper break. If you run a shop or a studio, the last sections show how to plan and post your holiday hours without reprinting a sign every month.

2027 Holidays: The Full Federal List

Federal holidays are set by law in Title 5 of the U.S. Code, and OPM publishes the resulting dates for each year. For 2027, the list has 11 holidays. The table shows the date each holiday is observed by most federal employees, which is the day federal offices close.

Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.Monday, January 18Third Monday of January
Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day)Monday, February 15Third Monday of February
Memorial DayMonday, May 31Last Monday of May
Juneteenth National Independence DayFriday, June 18June 19 is a Saturday
Independence DayMonday, July 5July 4 is a Sunday
Labor DayMonday, September 6First Monday of September
Columbus DayMonday, October 11Second Monday of October
Veterans DayThursday, November 11
Thanksgiving DayThursday, November 25Fourth Thursday of November
Christmas DayFriday, December 24December 25 is a Saturday

The name in the law for the February holiday is Washington's Birthday. OPM notes that other institutions, such as states and private employers, may use other names, and most calendars print Presidents' Day. The same goes for the October Monday: OPM lists Columbus Day, while some states and cities mark that Monday as Indigenous Peoples' Day.

One more date belongs on any 2027 planner even though it is not a 2027 holiday: New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so OPM's 2028 schedule lists Friday, December 31, 2027 as the observed holiday.

Three Holidays Move to Another Day in 2027

OPM's rule is short. If a holiday falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is treated as the holiday for most federal employees. If it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is. In 2027 that rule moves three holidays, and it moves a fourth one that belongs to 2028:

  • Juneteenth: Saturday, June 19, observed on Friday, June 18.
  • Independence Day: Sunday, July 4, observed on Monday, July 5. The fireworks still happen on the Fourth; the day off is the Monday.
  • Christmas Day: Saturday, December 25, observed on Friday, December 24.
  • New Year's Day 2028: Saturday, January 1, 2028, observed on Friday, December 31, 2027.

Moved days are where most planning mistakes happen, because not everyone follows the federal rule. Private employers set their own holiday calendar, and many do not observe Juneteenth at all. Banks are another case. The Federal Reserve says that when a holiday falls on a Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches are open the preceding Friday, while a Sunday holiday closes all Federal Reserve offices the following Monday. In practice, that means June 18, December 24 and December 31 may be ordinary business days at your bank even though federal offices are closed, while July 5 is a closed day for the Federal Reserve too. If a payment or a payroll date sits near one of these Fridays, check your bank's own schedule rather than assuming.

Every Long Weekend in 2027

Because five holidays are fixed to Mondays and the weekend rule pushes three more to a Friday or a Monday, 2027 has an unusually tidy run of three-day weekends on the federal calendar:

Long weekendDaysLength
New Year's DayFriday, January 1 to Sunday, January 33 days
Martin Luther King Jr. DaySaturday, January 16 to Monday, January 183 days
Presidents' DaySaturday, February 13 to Monday, February 153 days
Memorial DaySaturday, May 29 to Monday, May 313 days
JuneteenthFriday, June 18 to Sunday, June 203 days
Fourth of JulySaturday, July 3 to Monday, July 53 days
Labor DaySaturday, September 4 to Monday, September 63 days
Columbus DaySaturday, October 9 to Monday, October 113 days
ThanksgivingThursday, November 25 to Sunday, November 284 days if Friday is off
ChristmasFriday, December 24 to Sunday, December 263 days
New Year's 2028Friday, December 31 to Sunday, January 2, 20283 days

Four days of leave around a holiday can buy more than a week away.

Veterans Day is the only federal holiday in 2027 that lands mid-week without a natural bridge: Thursday, November 11. Taking Friday, November 12 off turns it into a four-day weekend. Father's Day (Sunday, June 20) sits right at the end of the Juneteenth weekend, which makes that Friday-to-Sunday stretch a good one for family plans.

Stretching the Breaks With a Few Days of Leave

The 2027 calendar rewards a little planning. These counts assume a Monday-to-Friday job that follows the federal dates; adjust them if your employer's list is different.

  • End of the year: 4 days of leave for 10 days off. Christmas is observed on Friday, December 24 and New Year's Day 2028 on Friday, December 31. Take Monday, December 27 to Thursday, December 30 and you are off from Friday, December 24 through Sunday, January 2, 2028.
  • Thanksgiving: 4 days of leave for 9 days off. Take Monday, November 22 to Wednesday, November 24 plus Friday, November 26, and you are off from Saturday, November 20 to Sunday, November 28. If your employer already gives the Friday, it is 3 days of leave.
  • Fourth of July: 4 days of leave for 9 days off. The observed holiday is Monday, July 5. Take Tuesday, July 6 to Friday, July 9 and you are off from Saturday, July 3 to Sunday, July 11.
  • Memorial Day: 4 days of leave for 9 days off. Take Tuesday, June 1 to Friday, June 4 for a stretch from Saturday, May 29 to Sunday, June 6.
  • Veterans Day: 1 day of leave for 4 days off. Friday, November 12 completes Thursday, November 11 to Sunday, November 14.

Before you file the request, check the school calendar if children travel with you: winter and fall breaks are set by each district and rarely match the federal list day for day.

Observances That Are Not Days Off

Many dates people plan around are not federal holidays. Federal offices stay open, and most employers treat them as normal days, but shops, restaurants and families still plan for them.

ObservanceDate in 2027How the date is set
Valentine's DaySunday, February 14Fixed date
Daylight saving time startsSunday, March 14Second Sunday of March, by federal law
St. Patrick's DayWednesday, March 17Fixed date
Good FridayFriday, March 26Two days before Easter; not a federal holiday
Easter SundaySunday, March 28Calculated from the church calendar
Mother's DaySunday, May 9Second Sunday in May, by federal law
Father's DaySunday, June 20Third Sunday in June, by federal law
HalloweenSunday, October 31Fixed date
Daylight saving time endsSunday, November 7First Sunday of November, by federal law
Black FridayFriday, November 26Day after Thanksgiving
Christmas Eve and New Year's EveFriday, December 24 and Friday, December 31Both are also observed federal holidays in 2027

Easter is early in 2027. Easter Sunday falls on March 28, so Good Friday is March 26, and spring breaks built around Easter will land in late March rather than April. Halloween on a Sunday also changes the shape of the season: expect many costume parties to land on Friday, October 29 or Saturday, October 30.

The two clock changes matter for anyone who books appointments or runs online events across states. Arizona (outside the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not observe daylight saving time, so the gap between those states and the rest of the country changes on March 14 and again on November 7.

State, Local and Company Holidays

The federal list is the floor of what most calendars share, not the whole picture. States set their own legal holidays, and some add days the federal government does not observe, or observe the same day under a different name. Cities and school districts add their own closures on top of that, and private employers publish their own list, which may include the day after Thanksgiving and may leave out Columbus Day or Juneteenth.

Three practical checks before you lock in plans:

  • Your employer's 2027 list. If you work in the private sector, it decides whether you are off, not the federal schedule.
  • Your state's official holiday list. State offices, courts and motor vehicle departments follow it, so it matters for errands.
  • The school calendar. Teacher workdays and breaks rarely match the federal list, and they decide whether a long weekend is a family weekend.

Holiday Hours for a Small Business

For a shop, salon, studio or restaurant, the holiday list is a staffing and communication plan. A few habits save most of the confusion:

  • Decide per date, not per holiday. Write down "Friday, December 24: open 9 AM to 2 PM" rather than "Christmas: short day". The observed dates in 2027 make "the holiday" ambiguous.
  • Announce changes two weeks ahead. Post them on the door, on your page and in your profiles at the same time, so no channel contradicts the others.
  • Keep your regular hours untouched. Holiday hours are an exception for one date. Rewriting your normal week for a single Monday is how wrong hours end up staying online in January.
  • Remember the clock changes. March 14 and November 7 are Sundays. If you take bookings or run online events across time zones, check reminders and confirmations that week.

For the door itself, our free business hours sign maker prints a clean opening hours sign with a QR code that can lead to the page where your hours are always current, and the printable store signs tool has a ready "Closed for the holidays" sign with the first day closed and the day you reopen.

Putting the 2027 Dates in Your Calendar

Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and Outlook can all show a national holiday calendar for your country, and that is the quickest way to see the federal dates. What those built-in calendars do not show is your own plan: the Friday you are taking off, the team's early close on December 24 or the date your store reopens.

For those, create the event once and share it. Our add to calendar link generator turns one event into links for Google Calendar, Outlook and Yahoo, plus an .ics file for Apple Calendar, so a whole team or family can save the same date with one tap. Use the time zone where the event happens, and for all-day closures check the last day on both phone and computer before you send it.
