An essay with a word limit
A 500 word school essay: the counter shows 487 words, so there is room for one more sentence.
A bio
A 160 character bio shows 10 left on Instagram (150) and fits X (160) exactly.
A talk
A 900 word speech takes about 5 minutes out loud at 183 words per minute.

Questions
How are words counted?
A word is a run of letters or numbers. "Don't" and "e-mail" are one word each. Emoji and symbols alone are not words.
Characters with or without spaces?
Both are shown. School and translation work often ask for characters with spaces; some forms count without.
Why does my count differ on Instagram or X?
Networks count differently: X weighs emoji and links, YouTube counts bytes. The table counts each limit the way that network says.
How is reading time worked out?
Words divided by words per minute. The defaults, 238 reading and 183 out loud, come from a 2019 review of reading studies. You can change them.
Is my text saved?
No. It stays in the page and is gone when you close it. For notes that stay, use the online notepad.
