Running Pace Calculator

Work out your running pace from a race or training run, the finish time you will get at a pace, or how far you go in a given time. Use km or miles, pick a race distance, and compare 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon times at the same pace and with Riegel's prediction.

Pace–

Type a distance and a time (or a pace) to see the result.

Times rounded to the second. The Riegel prediction assumes a race effort and similar training for the longer distance; it is a guide, not a promise.

The link carries the distance, time and pace typed on this page and nothing else.

How pace is calculated

One relation

Time = distance × pace. Pace = time ÷ distance; time = pace × distance; distance = time ÷ pace. A 10K in 50:00 is 3,000 seconds ÷ 10 km = 300 seconds, a pace of 5:00 per km.

Km and miles

One mile is 1.609344 km. A pace of 5:00 /km is 8:03 /mi; speed in km/h = 60 ÷ pace in minutes.

Riegel prediction

Peter Riegel found that race times grow a little faster than distance: T2 = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)^1.06. From a 50:00 10K it predicts about 3:50:01 for a marathon, slower than the 3:30:59 of the same pace all the way.

What this leaves out

Hills, heat, wind and fuelling. For long races, the prediction works best when you have trained for that distance.

How to use it

  1. Choose what to find: pace, finish time or distance, and km or miles.
  2. Pick a race distance or "Other distance" and type it.
  3. Type the time (hours, minutes, seconds) or the pace (minutes and seconds per km or mile).
  4. Read the result, compare the race table and copy the link or download the card.

Examples

  • 10K in 50:00

    Pace 5:00 /km (8:03 /mi), 12 km/h. At the same pace a marathon takes 3:30:59; Riegel predicts 3:50:01.

  • Marathon at 5:30 /km

    Finish time 3:52:04. The same pace gives a 27:30 5K and a 55:00 10K.

  • 5K in 27:54 in miles

    3.1 miles in 27:54 is 9:00 /mi (5:36 /km), 6.67 mph.

Questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide the time by the distance. 50 minutes for 10 km is 5 minutes per km, written 5:00 /km.

What pace do I need for a sub-4 marathon?

Under 5:41 /km, or about 9:09 /mi, all the way. Type the marathon and 3:59:59 to see it.

How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?

Multiply by 1.609344. 5:00 /km is 8:03 /mi.

What is the Riegel formula?

A prediction of race time at a new distance: T2 = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)^1.06. It assumes you race both distances with the same effort and training.

How long is a half marathon?

21.0975 km (13.1 miles). A marathon is 42.195 km (26.2 miles).

Is my data saved?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Only the "copy link" button puts your numbers in a link, and only when you use it.
