Overlap rules to remember
Positions are numbers, not roles
Front row from left to right: 4, 3, 2. Back row from left to right: 5, 6, 1. Position 1 is back right and serves (rules 7.4.1.1 and 7.4.1.2).
Front and back
Each back-row player has to be further from the net than the front-row player ahead: 1 behind 2, 6 behind 3, 5 behind 4. Level with is allowed, and the feet decide (rules 7.4.2.1 and 7.4.3.1).
Left and right
Inside each row the order has to hold from side to side: 4, then 3, then 2 in front, and 5, then 6, then 1 at the back. A front-row player is not compared sideways with a back-row player (rules 7.4.2.2 and 7.4.3.2).
Who has to be in order
In the 2025-2028 rules the receiving team must be in rotational order at the service hit, and the players of the serving team are free to occupy any position (rule 7.4). School, college and local leagues may still ask both teams to hold their order: check yours.
When you rotate
When the receiving team wins the rally it rotates one position clockwise: the player in 2 moves to 1 to serve, the player in 1 moves to 6 (rule 7.6.2). The service order is the starting line-up read from 1 to 6 (rule 12.2.1).
After the serve, and the libero
After the service hit everyone may move anywhere, which is how setters and hitters switch to their spots (rule 7.4.4). The libero may not serve or block (rule 19.3.1.3). This page shows the libero in the back row for the middle blocker, a common choice and not a rule.

Examples
5-1 with Maya setting
Maya starts in position 1 and serves first. She is in the back row for rotations 1, 2 and 3 (positions 1, 6 and 5) and in the front row for 4, 5 and 6. Riley, the opposite, starts in 4, across from her, so one of them is always in the front row. Dana, the libero, plays the back row for the middle blockers.
6-2 with two setters
Setter 1 starts in position 1 and setter 2 in position 4. In rotations 1 to 3 setter 1 is in the back row and sets while setter 2 attacks on the right. In rotations 4 to 6 they trade jobs. There are always three front-row attackers.
4-2 for a new team
The same two setters, but the one in the front row sets: setter 2 in rotations 1 to 3, setter 1 in rotations 4 to 6. Nobody has to run in from the back row, which is why it is the first system most teams learn.
Questions
Which way do you rotate in volleyball?
Clockwise, one position at a time, and only when your team wins the rally while the other team was serving. The player in position 2 moves to position 1 and serves.
What is the difference between a 5-1 and a 6-2?
A 5-1 has one setter for all six rotations and five attackers. A 6-2 has two setters: whichever is in the back row sets, so there are always three attackers in the front row.
What is an overlap?
A positional fault: at the moment of the serve a player is on the wrong side of a neighbour, either a back-row player in front of the front-row player ahead, or two players of the same row with the left and right order swapped.
Does the serving team have to be in rotation?
Under the FIVB 2025-2028 rules, no: only the receiving team must be in rotational order at the service hit. Many school, college and local competitions use other rule books, so check the one you play under.
Where does the libero go?
The libero replaces a back-row player without counting as a substitution, and may not serve or block under FIVB rules. This tool places the libero for the middle blocker in positions 5 and 6, the most common use.
