How area is calculated

Rectangle

Length × width. A room 12 ft by 15 ft is 180 ft².

Circle, triangle, trapezoid

Circle: π × diameter² ÷ 4. Triangle: base × height ÷ 2. Trapezoid: (side 1 + side 2) ÷ 2 × height. An L-shaped room is two rectangles: calculate each and add them.

Feet and metres

One foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so 1 m² = 10.764 ft². 180 ft² = 16.72 m².

Waste and cost

Flooring and tiles are bought with extra for cuts and breakage. Area × (1 + waste %) is what to buy; × your price per unit is the cost.
